Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability and the practice of autoethnography, which is recently widely recognized in the field of art psychotherapy. For this, the literature review on autoethnography and art psychotherapy was conducted and the results were as follows: First, autoethnograpy provides the opportunity of self-awareness of the art therapist as a researcher in the course. This eventually helps the growth of the art therapist. Second, it can provide the process of searching for creative as an unique feature of art psychotherapy, using images as materials. Third, autoethnograpy, which sees the subjectivity of the researcher as an reflection of others and social culture, beyond the individuality of the researcher, can expand the scope of understanding the art psychotherapy through the self-narrative of the art therapist. The study is meaningful as it suggests autoethnography as a potential research method to explore the uniqueness and specificity of art psychotherapy systematically and creatively.
