Abstract Th is study is a qualitative study on the psychological and emotional experiences of
middle-aged male workers. Th e purpose of this study is to explore the circumstances
of experiencing depression and the process of overcoming it through interviews with
two middle-aged men who had a depression. It is to explore the specifi c external circumstances
that led them to depression and the emotional responses resulting from it,
and to understand more deeply the psychological issues and changes of middle-aged
men. It is expected and believed with confi dence that such exploration will be of practical
help for consultative approach to middle-aged men in various fields, including
social, family and career issues. According to the research, Jang Sung-ju (alias), the
participant of the study, experienced the feelings of resentment, deep sorrow, sorriness
and helplessness aft er the death of his wife and was overcoming these feeling with
the power of faith and bonding with the members in the congregation. Kim Changjin,
another study participant, experienced the feelings of loneliness, anxiety, frustration
and regret, thinking that he had no clue on how to live on and dealt with these
experiences with solution-oriented thinking or by looking for work to focus on. Th e
qualitative research on these individual cases concentrates more on understanding
uniqueness of individuals than generalizing the research results, based on the characteristics
of participants.
