Abstract This study aims to introduce theoretical backgrounds and research processes of portraiture methodology to help qualitative researchers carry out the methodology with practical guidelines. The researcher can collect high quality data set using in-depth interviews based on an ally relationship with participants and co-participating processes of intimate conversation. The method is quite different from other approaches in that how the researcher probes with participants in order to explore major aspects of theme based on the principle of sympathetic introspection. This paper presented three major parts: conducting portraiture methodology; conducting in-depth interview; articulating meanings and writing portraits. It turned out that the ¡®participants as an ally¡¯ relationship plays a major role in increasing the level of communication with participant as well as validity of portrait writings.
