title A Life History Study on Middle-aged Women Experiencing Insomnia

Abstract Th is study is a life history study on the experience of insomnia among middle-aged
women. In the study, in-depth interviews were conducted to explore subjective inner
world of the participants to understand the lives of people, experiencing insomnia
and to come up with remedial measures. Middle-aged woman who had experienced
insomnia until recently participated in the research and their experiences were analyzed,
divided into ¡°area of life¡±, ¡°changeover point¡± and ¡°adaptation¡± as suggested by
Mandelbaum (1973). Th e study results showed that in the area of life, ¡°warm family,
beloved daughter, friends and health,¡± and ¡°happy marriage, husband¡¯s love¡± were
defi ned. Based on these fi ndings, the researchers looked into what was the actual pain
that the middle-aged women experienced with insomnia and how they came to accept
and refl ect upon their life with the experience. In addition, the researchers attempted
to understand the psychological and physical changes these women go through in the
process of experiencing and overcoming insomnia. Th e study also provided psychological
insights on the subjective inner world associated with the experience of insomnia
and this is expected to be applied to psychotherapy counseling programs.
