title Becoming a Supervisor: Consensual Qualitative Research on Supervisor Development in Creative Arts Therapy

Abstract This study aims to understand the experience of supervisors to develop expertise in their path of professional advancement in creative arts therapy. To address the research purpose, the researcher interviewed 10 supervisors with average of 12 years of experiences on their experiences in the course of professional development as supervisors in the field. The collected interview data were analysed, using consensual qualitative research method that requires consensual process in every step of data analysis to generate reliable results and applicable theories. The result showed that five domains including ¡°experiences as a novice supervisor,¡± ¡°experiences of efforts for growth,¡± ¡°experiences of expertise development,¡± ¡°goals for further development,¡± and ¡°suggestions for development of the field,¡± and 19 affiliated categories were generated. According to the result of cross analysis, it was general that supervisors in the field experienced anxieties due to insufficient competencies to understand the role of supervisor and to deal with counter-transference issues in the novice phase. However, as they become more experienced supervisors, they grew and advanced professionally as they accumulated the experience of supervisory intervention techniques and competencies. This study is a qualitative examination of supervisors¡¯ experiences in their path of professional development in creative arts therapy, and the results provide valuable information for development of supervisors¡¯ expertise.
