Abstract The purpose of this study is to review the process of male music therapists developing professional identity. To that end, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with eight male music therapists who are currently working in the field and used a consensual qualitative research method to analyze the collected data. The analysis was defined in five categories: motivation in selecting profession, experiencing difficulties related to the profession, experiences in overcoming difficulties related to the profession, positive experience related to the profession, and suggestions for junior male therapists and these are divided into 17 sub-categories. It was found that male music therapists experienced difficulties related to the profession while developing their professional identities, but they achieve professional growth, making efforts to overcome these difficulties. The status of being just a few in the field were found to be advantageous for their scarcity. This study is meaningful in that it reviewed the unique experiences of men within the field of music therapy. It also provides a basic set of data that can distinguish the professional identity of male music therapists to offer them a direction for professional growth.
