Abstract The study is to understand diversity, uniqueness and special characteristics of
individual human beings, based on the perspective of qualitative research. Narrative
inquiry methodology was used to understand experiences of a student at a regionalprivate
university who took temporary leave of absence, by inquiring into his life stories.
Research puzzle was built around how his personal practical knowledge (Connelly &
Clandinin, 1984, 1985) from his experiences in life is constructing his stories to live by
(Clandinin et al., 2006). As a result, the following experiential meanings emerged from
the narrative inquiry. First, loneliness: forming the quality of relationships. Second,
experience of achievement: flourished confidence. Third, poverty: key factor in making
decision. Fourth, hope: encountering with good people. Last, success: building a house
for his mom. I hope that this study could contribute to expending the comprehensive
understanding of students, taking temporary leave of absence, going beyond
understanding on general individuals and also contributing to building social, cultural,
familial, and institutional narratives for them and developing supporting systems in
administrative and affective aspects.
