Abstract The study started with the intention of the research as art therapist, to understand René Magritte's works and life, paying attention to the traumatic experience of the artist, witnessing his mother's suicide in childhood. Based on the life history of Rene Magritte, as an artist and writer, the study explored features of artistic expression and symbolic meanings to show how an artist, suffering from traumatic experiences in the childhood, looked deep into his inner self, expressed it artistically and transformed in art. To this end, the method of life history research was adopted with focus on the process of reinterpreting the subjective system of meaning of the artist. Biography of Suzie Gablik(1970) was also reviewed to look into meaningful key contents and artistic features of the time, together with representative works of the artist. The study findings showed that Magritte was able to overcome depression derived from the traumatic experience of witnessing his mother¡¯s death, while transforming it in arts and was able to accept himself and create something new out of the traumatic memory. The researcher analyzed Magritte works of art in perspectives of an art therapist and it is meaningful to find that the process runs similarity with the process of trauma patients reorganizing memory, exploring and expressing themselves, while working on creative art work and growing positive power to overcome painful memory and develop positive and creative attitudes.
