Abstract As they grow older, competences and performance of the elderly tend to diminish. In this case, the elderly often lose their identity. To live a quality life, the resources the elderly need to be fully activated. This was aimed to guarantee a self-determined lifestyle for the elderly, so they should become competent to fight their way to overcome their own problems in their environments. The purpose of this study was to find out the meaning of biographical learning. The focus is on writing autobiographies, with six elderly. In the research, a core cases from these elderly - who experienced dramatic changes in life - are identified and described. In reviewing the life history, different approach was adopted by the period of childhood, youth, marriage, middle age and old age to analyze how the life took its turn with the environmental changes. The identity the elderly established through biographicity writing was described as a reflection from life history they learned. In the end, the writing of autobiographies was proposed as a channel of self-directed learning for the elderly and the meaning of biographical learning was highlighted.
